It's Easter Monday at home and all my family back there would not believe what else but "Easter Bunnies" I have seen the last couple of days: Elephants, wild boars, sambar deer, chital, nilgai, the snub nosed marsh crocodiles – muggers as they are named here, striped hyenas, Indian porcupines, longeared hedgehogs and even one cobra.

After years I finally returned to India, my homecountry and  source of secret dreams and unrealized photo-projects.

But now it should be the most fascinating day of the entire trip: After days and days of tracking  with the local wildlife rangers and game wardens, the two tour-guides of UW-SAFARI finally promised me to spot a tiger and give me a chance to take some really good pictures! A more than 80% chance to see the big cat – at least!

The day before they caught a tiger by camera - jumping in some murky pond and catching a snake in it. The pictures they took told me enough to know: That’s the place to go!

I was told that it is no use to try and find the undisputed king of these jungles by riding on one of the elephants, as we did the days before. I was glad. As I had seen this scary video spot on the internet: A tiger jumps on one of these elephants carrying tourists and attacking the “mahoud” (elephant handler). But when they woke me up in the middle of the night to reach the prepared outlook post in time I’d paid a lot to be let in peace…

It took about two hours from the camp “ranthambore bagh” to reach the place by vehicles and on foot. And now it was just me in the well camouflaged tree hut with the local ranger and my cameras. Lans and Panos got into position left and right somewhere in the bamboo and trees. Now that the tension on my Indian buddy’s face becomes obvious, I appreciate their “flanking” of my “fortress”.  It’s still a rare privilege to encounter tigers in the wild and quite a lot of visitors come to these parks and game reserves that’ll never even get a chance to see one! Not to talk about taking pictures! Not to think about real good ones!

The jungle is full of sounds in the early morning, as it is over the day, too. But later one gets more used to this. And suddenly – there is silence in the near surrounding... and I realize that I must have been watched already for a while by that mysterious animal we were waiting for. The game warden has seen it that same second: The head of a mighty male tiger! Just across the little clearing in front of us, few meters away. Clearly it has detected us and looks me straight into the eyes – and my camera.

When I heard it going “click” I stopped breathing, afraid the tiger might turn away. But not at all: The majestic cat steps out of it´s cover from bushes and bamboo and displays itself in full size and color to my lenses.

It looks to the left – where Panos must be hidden somewhere – then turns around and with one enormous leap into the brownish green curtains  it disappears as sudden as it showed up. I felt it was only some seconds that we faced the tiger, but the number of pictures I took tells me different. What a day…  I felt so proud of the wildlife heritage of my country!

Thanks to UW-SAFARI – these guys hit the floor running wherever they take their customers into the great outdoors on sea and land as well! Each place they brought me to was well selected and perfectly prepared. No matter what my photographic demands were, it was taken care for. I’ll never forget this Easter Monday’s morning during a fabulous tour through south-east Asia.

Soon I have to do a scuba trip by liveaboard with them. Must be as fascinating but less exhausting…
